Wilderness & Ecotourism
Guests on our exclusive guided walk are treated to luxurious accommodation at our eco-friendly lodge. Shearwater Lodge was purpose-built with comfort and enjoyment in mind. Set in a spectacular alpine valley at an elevation of 1000m (3280ft), this eco-friendly lodge has six guest rooms, accommodating up to twelve on a twin/share basis.
Here you will be able to relax and unwind whilst taking in the sweeping vistas of the surrounding environment. The scenery is spectacular but be prepared to find your gaze diverted suddenly by resident wildlife, deer or chamois, drifting quietly amongst the golden tussocks. Native songbirds in the trees or the inquisitive kea, who love to shuffle along the balcony in search of mischief, all regularly captivate visitors' attention.
High Country / Farm
You will find many reasons why this exclusive New Zealand guided walk is so deserving of the acclaim it receives, but the fact that a maximum of 12 visitors share in the walk at any one time makes it particularly appealing to those seeking 'the ultimate wilderness experience.'
Guests are treated to an authentic and sensory wilderness encounter, complemented by delicious meals and luxurious accommodation in an outstanding alpine environment.
The guided walk is a total holistic wilderness experience traversing 3 distinct
eco-systems over 3 days. The local knowledgeable guides ensure a suitable walking pace is maintained throughout with frequent stops to describe the abundant flora and fauna that can be seen.
Wine & Cuisine
Guests enjoy delicious New Zealand cuisine with complimentary pre-dinner wine. Local produce is used whenever possible sourced from environmentally reponsible suppliers. Picnic lunches are provided on the track.
This is a place you have to see to believe.
There are no adjectives to describe how it feels to survey the view from this luxurious lodge perched on the side of a mountain, 3500 feet above sea level on the highest privately owned farm in New Zealand.
Shearwater Lodge, named after the endangered seabird the Huttons Shearwater, with one of the two remaining colonies in the world on the property and the other on adjacent DOC land, is owned and run by Nicky McArthur. She is passionate about the conservation of the species and the environment in general, with Shearwater Lodge's recycling system avoiding the production of any landfill waste, power for the lodge is generated by its own hydro system (no hairdryers in this slice of paradise).
So, how to get to this astounding destination? For those short of time or energy a quick helicopter ride, for those who desire the full impact a five hour guided hike, with a fabulous picnic lunch atop a ridge with a view to the North Island and to the south Kaikoura township. On arrival at the lodge most people's reaction is 'How did this get here?" From the sumptuous afternoon tea, the cordon bleu cuisine (one of Nicky's multitude of talents is that she is a trained chef), stylish comfortable guest rooms this is pure 'unfussy luxury' to quote a contented guest.
Kaikoura is traditionally seen as a destination focused on Whale Watching and Dolphin swimming but clearly there is much more to this area, a local helicopter pilot who regularly flies hunters into the Seaward Kaikoura's describes a brilliant turquoise lake and dramatic terrain to rival any other in the country, just crying out to be explored.
An entry in the guest book "Sometimes in life people can build up too much of an expectation of something and then be disappointed with the reality. Somehow I feel this experience has never done that with anyone!"
