New Zealand has 7 professional theatres, the oldest Wellington’s Downstage. Our National Ballet Company is based in Wellington but regularly tours the country. The NBR Opera is based in Auckland but also holds performance seasons in Wellington during the year. Whether your bent is classical or contemporary you will find something to tempt your musical palate in New Zealand. We are fortunate to have excellent orchestras in our main centres and a touring Symphony Orchestra.
You’ll find interesting contemporary music in many venues, especially popular are outdoor festivals over the summer months.

From its founding in 1980, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra has established itself as a valued cultural asset for the Auckland region and is the city’s only resident full-time, professional symphony orchestra.

NBR New Zealand Opera is New Zealand's largest professional opera company. The company was formed in 2000 when the Wellington City Opera and Auckland Opera companies decided to merge.

Otago / Deep South
Fortune Theartre (Dunedin) the world's southernmost professional theatre company and is the sole professional theatre group in Dunedin. The building is registered as a category I historic place by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, which recognises its historic and architectural significance.
The Southern Sinfonia is Dunedin's only professional orchestra, and one of four regional orchestras in New Zealand's largest cities funded by Creative New Zealand.
