Wine & Cuisine
Straw Lodge is located on Barrow's organic vineyard in the heart of Marlborough's Wairau Valley wine region. Here the soils of the Wairau River terraces, Marlborough's long dry summers, cool nights and careful vineyard management create the ideal conditions for the production of quality Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes. Organic practices, low yields and hand harvesting combine to produce fruit and wine that retain the vibrant varietal flavours that make New Zealand wines so distinctive. With no pesticides or herbicides being used on the property, and minimal interference in the natural growing processes, the vines are left to produce fruit that is a true and wonderful reflection of the place. Guests have the opportunity to taste and purchase Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir wine from the fruit of the vineyard. Homes deliveries can be arranged around the world.
Breakfasts are a feature at Straw Lodge. Home grown produce is featured in all breakfasts and platters. Breakfasts are served in the Lodge or under the vines in the out-door courtyard area. Breakfasts include a range of fresh and cooked fruits with a selection of home-made mueslis and other cereals. Many home-made jams and marmalades are available to compliment the olive-oil spreads, wholemeal breads and muffins from the kitchen, free range eggs and bacon, with Jane’s Egg Benedicts, Herb Scrambled Eggs and omelettes tempting the most discerning palates. Fresh, espresso coffee, including de-caffeinated, hot chocolate and a range of teas are offered. The property also produces Pure Virgin Olive Oil for the guests to sample.
Guests may pick from the garden if choosing to self-cater in the evenings. A specialty of the property are the Vineyard Dinner platters @ $75.00 for 2 persons. These platters are a generous helping for two and are prepared using only the best and freshest local produce, including local sea-food, wild-meat products, breads and fruits and vegetables from the local Farmers Market and home gardens. A glass of World’s End Wine is included.

Straw Lodge is a collection of ‘living, breathing’ straw bale buidings set on a working certified organic vineyard, producing sauvignon blanc and pinot noir under the World’s End label. Producing sufficient olive oil for their own consumption and bountiful citrus and fruits there is a feeling of nature’s generosity in this Marlborough haven.
As well as the straw bale suites, adjacent to the main house there is the relatively new addition of a stylish cottage nestled between the vines and the orchard.
Outstanding craftsmanship is evident thoughout superb timbers used to panel the walls and create the artisan furniture which provides comfort and aesthetic pleasure.
Owners Bill and NettieBarrow and Jane Craighead are hands on in the vineyard as well as the hospitality side of the business, ably assistance by Texas, the distinguished black laborador who acts as part time butler, accompanying guests to breakfast in the main house or in the loggia.
With a network of walking and biking tracks at the end of the lane, exploring the stopbanks guests have access to 6 road bikes and two electric cycles.
Inveterate travellers Nettie and Jane relish the opportunity to enjoy the company of their guests and share their environment with them.
“We can’t travel all the time, so we bring the people and their cultures to us”.
