The only word to describe the location of this Boutique Hotel is astounding. It is a destination in its own right close to the wild West Coast Surf beaches and an easy drive from the CBD yet the illusion of isolation remains.
Having turned off Scenic Drive the sweeping driveway, an engineering feat in itself,leads us down for a kilometre through dense virgin rainforest. Set in 70 acres of native forest and adjacent to the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Park, the hotel is perched on a ridge 240m above sea level and commands stunning views over the farmland below and the city beyond.
Auckland's Waitakere Estate is privately owned and operated by the son of it's creator. The original holding was 35 acres and it took Captain Nevill-Jackson, an airline pilot, three days to cut a trail from the road down to the site of the hotel. The original wooden family home, somewhat modified, now houses the restaurant and conference facilities. During the 1960s, having retired Captain Nevill Jackson decided to build some accommodation on the site comprising three motel units, he also built a swimming pool and squash court which are still in use today. Following on from this he constructed the large lounge and 12 hotel rooms attached to the main building. Completed in the 1980s. Over the last two years there has been a major refurbishment of the rooms, restaurant and other public areas in modern classic styling.
The restaurant is available for breakfast lunch and dinner seven days a week and the Estate's special packages are innovative. It is a spectacular venue for a wedding, conference or any special occasion. It is one of the city's hidden treasures, with many Aucklanders ignorant of its existence. Only forty minutes from Auckland Airport it is ideal for travelers weary from a long flight, their holiday begins immediately they arrive in this peaceful environment.
One of the packages on offer is a helicopter flight over the Waitakere Ranges, complete with a bottle of champagne and on arrival a superb a la carte 3 course lunch or dinner. The return trip can be by helicopter or by limousine to the heliport.
