Joe and Kay’s mutual interests in cruising, a love of the sea and of travel, gave them a bond from the onset. They spent some years together cruising most of the year in Mexico and leading summer Food and Wine Tours in France, Italy, and Mexico.
In late September 2001 they came to New Zealand to research a new venue for Food and Wine Tours, only to fine they had stepped into a magical land – with over 480 boutique wineries, all competing and challenging each other to new heights. Completing the picture, these magnificent wines were driving the culinary craft to discover new ways of presenting and using the local ingredients.
They discovered “foodie” heaven: New Zealand was becoming the culinary crown of the Southern Hemisphere. Chefs were taking the extraordinary meat and produce of New Zealand’s farmers, adding a touch of Oriental flair and European cooking methods, thus creating an original style of cooking that we recognize as New Zealand cuisine.
Joe and Kay fell in love with the land, the lifestyle, the people, their attitude and the possibility of living in New Zealand.
Nelson was the perfect base, a small city but large enough to have a lot of cultural events. The School of Music, the World of Wearable Arts, The Theatre Royale, The Sutter Art Gallery, and the numerous sculptors, painters and potters made for a lively and interesting cultural scene. The Nelson Saturday Market with local produce, crafts and art reminded us of the Provencal markets of Southern France.
Local supplies of goat cheese, olive oil, and artisan style breads made it easy for Kay to cook her favorite European dishes. Lovely local wines and great restaurants are abundant in the area and attract both international and Kiwi visitors. Nelson boasts the greatest hours of sunshine in New Zealand, which makes both hiking and beach going a year-round possibility and their love of gardening flourishes.

Deliciously welcoming, a little quirky and superbly comfortable, A Culinary Experience Luxury Bed and Breakfast is a purpose built accommodation set high on the hills commanding magnificent views of Nelson Haven, the Boulder Bank and Tasman Bay.
Kay and Joe started their bed and breakfast business in a family home a little further down the hill but the desire to further develop and improve encouraged them to design this spacious, luxurious new version.
Challenged with a steep site they have achieved miracles with terracing and strategic retaining walls (one of which ,just outside the sauna, is decorated boldly with larger than life native flora). An olive grove, grapes and extensive raised herb and vegetable beds as well as five star 'Hilton' accommodation for hens and three alpacas (both shelters feature stained glass windows) make this an enchanting few acres to explore.
Kay, who previously owned the School of International Cuisine in Laguna Beach, California, creates truly gourmet dinners, often utilising produce from the luscious garden. Kay's breakfasts are legendary, blueberry pancakes, omelettes, salmon, fruits and cereals. Kay's kitchen has been designed to accommodate the cooking classes for which she is widely renowned, her enthusiasm is infectious and her skills well worth studying.
The European influence reflected in the guest rooms harks back to Kay and Joe's experiences when leading food and wine tours in Italy and France - the Chambre de Provence is decorated with French art and linen, and the Tuscan Room , Italian.
Joe, a certified naturopathic doctor and masseur, can soothe away the stresses with therapeutic massage, follow that up with a stint in the sauna or a soak in the hot tub and relaxation is inevitable.
