Aoturoa

The prospect of being ‘wowed’ by the spectacular and constantly changing mountain views from the site of Aoturoa, just out of Wanaka has led hosts Jon and Lesley Davies through a ten year development project of what was a bare paddock…the architectural result a marriage between French country style and  New Zealand elements.
The home integrates into the tussock environment with surrounding plantings including an orchard (including cherry trees) and an olive grove.  Jon describes gardening in this soil, which takes the description “free-draining” to a new level, is a challenge, but perseverance has prevailed.
Access to the Clutha River is assured with the Davies leasing fifty acres on the riverbank below the house.  Hardy guests take a dip in this crystal clear, bracing waterway.
An emphasis on easy natural interaction between guest and host means visitors are encouraged to spend time in the kitchen and living area; in fact coffee and tea making facilities are in the kitchen.
The house has an easy flow; voluminous ceilings ensure a feeling of spaciousness and light.  Decorated in hues of the surrounding flora the living areas and bedrooms are serene, bathrooms utilise adventurous colours and are generous in their proportions.

Aoturoa is 17 kilometres from Wanaka and 3 kilometres from Luggate on your left hand side on Highway 6.
