Eastern North Island
Just an hour and a half from Auckland and Hamilton, yet a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life, is the astoundingly beautiful Coromandel Peninsula with its pristine white and golden beaches and misty rainforest cloaked interior. In approx 950AD Kupe set foot in Whitianga, followed in 1769 by Captain James Cook.
To the east of Coromandel lies the Bay of Plenty, its consistently mild climate and fertile soils and sub-tropical waters making it a bountiful place abounding with local produce. Surfers, kayakers and swimmers flock to the legendary beaches and visitors revel in the vibrant coastal lifestyle enjoying the luxury villas and boutique bed and breakfasts on offer. Following the coast through Whakatane with live volcano White Island offshore the highway heads around East Cape, small settlements dotted along the way.
Gisborne, is one of the sunniest places in the country and is famed as the first city in the world to see the sun Inland the hauntingly spiritual Te Urewera National Park and Lake Waikaremoana.
To the south, still hugging the coast we find the renowned wine, agricultural and fruit growing region of Hawkes Bay with cities Art Deco capital Napier and Hastings.
