Wilderness & Ecotourism
Wilderness at Poronui
Poronui is a true back country wilderness property set in the heart of the Kaimanawa mountains where all visitors can enjoy and experience the natural wilderness of New Zealand. This unique environment provides visitors a taste of so much that is special about New Zealand. Even more impressive is the range of natural habitats and environmental features available in one location.
The Poronui wilderness is also the perfect scene for just about any outdoor activity. From hunting and fishing to photography or picnicking by the river, with horseback riding and hiking somewhere in between, there is one thing they all have in common - the quality of the experience.
Wild, rugged ungovernable, the search for adjectives to adequately describe the terrain and climate of Poronui Station goes on. The accommodation and service at Blake House are in stark contrast, civilised in the extreme.
The journey to Blake House made by 4WD is, to the uninitiated, an adrenalin rush. The destination, set high above the river in tussockland. The building itself a strong statement its red ironclad exterior a reference to the iconic musterer's hut which is Poronui's signature. The interior uses substantial recycled beams and stone to create an air of solidity and permanence. The four suites are spacious and private and bunkroom comfortable and ideal for an overflow of guests. For those who wish to self cater a fully equipped and particularly well appointed kitchen, or there is the option of a resident chef or for occasions a mobile kitchen can be set up on site. Other dining options include a barbeque at the 'River Camp' or at the Stables, or for a particularly special occasion a banquet in the underground wine cellar, beneath the Stables.
The farming operation is varied indeed, Wagyu beef breeding, Arapawa sheep and a beekeeping business producing the much sought after active manuka honey. With red deer for trophy hunting the smaller Sika can be seen in the wild throughout the property. Flyfishing is a popular pastime, horse trekking in small groups with the resident groom is fabulous with such varied trails available. With a number of highly regarded golf courses accessible either by road or helicopter Poronui can cater for all tastes. Tailored tours for shopping, gardens are organised for those craving a change.
