Meander up a quiet country lane six minutes' drive from the eclectic town of Westport and you reach Riverview Lodge, nestled amidst beautifully tended gardens overlooking the mighty Buller River.
There was plenty of parking and a warm greeting from Noeleen who has created country retreat bed and breakfast accommodation which can be counted as one of the areas finest. Our well-appointed room was one of three with a spacious verandah, the ideal place to unwind after a long drive up the coast. The fourth bedroom has an additional lounge and is attached to the main house. I made note to get down to the grass tennis court later.
We decided to meander through the two acres of manicured gardens, until we reached the open river house which was the perfect vantage point to enjoy peaceful river views and get even closer to nature and the abundance of native birds such as Tui, Woodpigeon and the friendly Fantail.
Back in the main accommodation area there is a large dining room and lounge which was ours to enjoy a game of cards and to meet fellow travellers hear their tales. Breakfast is served here.
This region has so much to offer so plan on staying a while to explore Westport's arts, crafts, antiques and coal town museum. There is a limitless range of adventure activities and only a 20 minute drive to Cape Foulwind's fur seal colony. Noelen can also organise tours up to the main Solid Energy coalmine, New Zealand's biggest, although this must be booked one day prior.
