The spectacular West Coast is the heart and soul of New Zealand, were history has forged a special kind of magic and rugged landscapes abound. Right in the centre of this is Kawhaka Lodge. Just 15mins from Hokitika this intimate lodge, built in traditional log cabin style sits on 20 acres of farmland and native bush bordering a stream. Our hosts Marj and Tony, a well respected fishing guide, greet us like friends. With just two suites, both beautifully appointed and opening out onto expansive native gardens, you can be assured that your every need is taken care of. We found plenty to do here apart from the excellent fishing that Kawhaka is renowned for. Spend a day on the coast exploring Punakaiki or Franz Josef Glacier, both of which are just a pleasant drive away or take the helicopter from the lawn. Coming home to Marj's hors d'oeuvres and dinner was a true highlight for she is a passionate and accomplished cook, the food excellent and the atmosphere warm and cosy. Something less energetic, it is just a short stroll through a stand of native trees to the river bank and even if you don't wish to fish today then this is a great place to relax and just watch the river run by. This is the essence of Kawhaka Lodge - relaxing with friends, not just a glorious place to stay for the night, but a place to unwind and enjoy at your own pace that West Coast special magic.
