Already captivated by the West Coast's rugged, remoteness, we found Collyer House in Haast encapsulated this region's undiscovered beauty. Situated right off the beaten track, you are guaranteed peace, privacy and luxurious accommodation here. This delightful bed and breakfast offers stunning views of Okuru Estuary and the Tasman Sea, set against a backdrop of ancient rainforest and mountains.
We were greeted by Neroli who had prepared a delicious afternoon tea upon our arrival with silver tea service and her famed home-baking. This home is warm and inviting, decorated with tasteful elegance. Each of the 4 finely appointed bedrooms enjoy stunning views. Expect to while the evening away with a bottle of wine and great conversation in front of the spectacular fireplace, cleverly constructed from local river rock. Read about the region's unique history from a fine collection of books, retreat to the separate lounge for quieter moments or outdoors to soak up the sights and sounds of nature.
Next morning, while indulging in an enormous country-style breakfast, Neroli was happy to offer guidance on the local sights. Her family has lived in the area for generations and she knows it well. Also a keen photographer, we thought to take up her offer of showing us the best scenic spots as Haast is renowned for its miles of deserted wild beaches, bush walks and beautiful scenery being part of a World Heritage Park.
