Sails Ashore is located on beautiful remote Stewart Island which although remote is very easy to get to and you will be rewarded, for this is a very special place. The journey to Sails Ashore is an adventure, either by ferry or plane or to spice up life a little, helicopter.
Our hosts Peter and Iris have been here many years with Peter arriving in 1969 as the Forest Service Ranger, a position that has grown to become the Department of Conservation.
Sails Ashore situated over spectacular Half Moon Bay has two king suites tastefully decorated using recycled and salvaged Rimu with all amenities to make our stay perfect. The balcony was a great place to sit with a drink and enjoy the view but not for too long.
The opportunity to visit the renowned Ulva Island is included in the package. Peter offers guided tours for up to six people to this unique haven for bird life, fauna and flowers that are in many cases not found anywhere else. Peter and Iris's knowledge is unsurpassed and this is a must do activity.
A hearty breakfast set us up for the following day as we walked the islands roads and chatted with the locals. Time is no issue here - fish and chips by the shore, a beer in the local hotel. Peter and Iris are superb hosts and their commitment to sustainable tourism is something to be admired.
