They call this the "barefoot experience". Why? This is truly a place to appreciate an environment where nature is at it best. Over the last six years John and Anne have dedicated their lives to realizing a dream of turning 740 acres into one of Northlands prime examples of native reserve. They have transformed acres of rough pasture on the peninsula into a haven of regenerating native bush and wetlands attracting rare and endangered birdlife. John, a professor at Auckland University in Environmental Management and Anne, an accomplished horsewoman are knowledgeable and passionate about developing Tahi into a world class ecological experience.
You might think that this means comprising in accommodation standard, not so. The two cottages, while different, have every amenity, luxurious furnishings and total peace and privacy. Then there is the romance of an outdoor oven/fireplace for those evenings on the deck.
No need to leave the property to experience 25km of horse trekking or walking tracks, numerous picnic spots for bird watching - 62 species have been spotted. However, for me the draw card was Pataua North Beach, a short walk through the wetland. This renowned beach is one of Northland's finest and chances are you will be the only one on it for miles.
Tahi is a place to stay for several days to experience the walking tracks, spectacular hillside views or historic sites… and going barefoot.
