The Ridge has two fully self-contained cottages, the modern Stables cottage and the stylish but more traditional Spa cottage. They are set high on a ridge overlooking the distant ocean and the closer sweep of the tidal estuary which slices through white sand dunes. The view is compelling from both cottages but I didn't feel uncomfortable perched on the side of a hill because kanuka and ferns threw their fronds around the edge of the decks.

The entrance side of the cottages are at ground level but the fronts are in the tree tops shared with grey warblers and silvereyes. I opened the door of the Stables cottage and was greeted by the wonderful aroma of freshly baked bread and comfortable contempory décor.

The Spa cottage is a smaller studio cottage and has a private spa pool with a glass ceiling so that I could lie back and contemplate the stars.

Perhaps one of the most endearing features of The Ridge is the attention to detail. Both cottages have large private decks with barbecues and marvellous views. Inside the cottages there are magazines, home-made jams, chocolates, and small kitchens that are thoughtfully equipped with everything you could conceivably require.
