Hidden in the hills overlooking Opua harbour, the Crows Nest Villas are named to reflect a nautical theme. The Bridge Deck and Sails both have breathtaking views and a casual, contemporary feel.
The self-contained villas had everything I needed for a weekend escape and were private enough for a romantic getaway or perfect for two families. Each bedroom within the villas has its own ensuite. As there was a barbecue available at Bridge Deck I decided to cook for myself while I enjoyed the afternoon sun.
The shops in Paihia were an easy five-minute drive away and I found everything there that I needed for a good New Zealand barbecue. If you are looking for a break from cooking however, Marj, who is the host, is only too happy to organise restaurant dining for the evening. After dinner I lazed on the sumptuous leather sofas reading books and watching the boats come and go through Opua port.
The following day I visited historic Russell, only a short ferry ride away and enjoyed the sights and restaurants.
