Nestled in splendid isolation in the sand dunes of world renown Ninety Mile Beach is Ninety Mile Beach Lodge- Taharangi Marie. The name in Maori means peaceful horizon.
Wind through farmland towards the sea to be greeted by Ron and Connie at the impressive entrance of this purpose built luxury lodge. Step into the great lounge and there in front of you is your playground, the whole stretch of Ninety Mile Beach is jaw dropping.
Two guest rooms are on the upper level, separated by a mezzanine floor overlooking an enormous guest lounge and taking in panoramic views. The rooms and lodge are decorated with beautiful, personal touches from Connie, a talented traditional Maori artist.
However the draw of the sea is irresistible. What to do next? There is the thrill of driving along the sand at low tide for as far as the eye can see with the breeze in your hair; or joining Ron gathering Tuatua (delicious local shellfish) to construct his famous Tuatua soup. Fishing is at the doorstep and it's only a short drive to the golf course. However I found Ninety Mile Beach Lodge was also the perfect place to unwind, sitting on the deck with a wine, watching and listening to the relentless ocean waves.
Ron and Connie are great hosts and we chose to dine in. What an occasion - fresh fish from just outside the door, great conversion, laughter and the lull of the sea right there. Finish with a dip in the spa pool. This definitely is one of the world's most special places.
