What better way to take in Golden Bay's beautiful natural surroundings than from Summerspring Luxury Lodge, a peaceful beachfront retreat on the outskirts of Takaka. The sound of the ocean was our guide as we approached this stunning European lodge on 2 hectares of landscaped grounds, gardens and exquisite native bush.
Originally from the Netherlands, owners Rob and Ellen are dedicated to sharing their secluded seaside serenity with guests. The renovated lodge is a luxuriously stylish, modern guest accommodation with two spacious upstairs studios; for families or larger parties downstairs is a self-contained unit with outdoor covered barbecue patio and decks. Uninterrupted bay views stretch from the spacious upstairs studio, the deck being the obvious choice for fresh breakfasts and aperitifs. All rooms have fully tiled ensuites, high quality linen with King-size beds that convert into singles as required. The beds are senior height, designed and crafted by owners.
Dinner by arrangement features local Anatoki salmon, venison, lamb or vegetarian complemented by fine Otago wines and Summerspring garden produce.
Local wineries and galleries may entice, otherwise Rob and Ellen are both outdoor enthusiasts, keen to showcase the best spots in neighbouring Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi or Farewell Spit. Better still, savour the beach and bush walks, swims, kayaking, petanque and don't forget to soak in the luxurious outdoor spa under star-studded skies. A return trip is a must, by which time the private tennis court will be complete.
