Found on Hawkes Bay's northern coastal border at the base of Mahia's incredibly picturesque and rugged peninsula, The Quarters is a self-contained cottage, its remote position far from trodden tourist tracks extends a promise of sanctuary that does not disappoint.
From the highway it is short drive past beautiful Mahanga Beach to the farmhouse where we meet our hosts, Malcolm and June. They escort us to the cottage, our home for a few days situated high on the hill like an eagle's eyrie, The Quarters sits above 4 kilometres of dramatic coastline. A rock islet below plays host to seals in cooler months. This unique accommodation harks back to the time when farmers provided shearer's quarters. Built 60 years ago and renovated to today's comfortable standard yet still retaining the charm of yesteryear with wooden floors, rustic furniture and a cosy wood burner. The cottage sleeps 8 with a fully equipped kitchen and living areas opening onto fabulous decks and panoramic views.
Time for lunch. Catch permitting there's crayfish and fresh-baked bread awaiting your attention. Now to explore this 1700 acre working sheep farm with its multitude of farm trails, walking tracks, coastline and stony trout streams interspersed with mysterious deep pools. Our stay will be remembered for the adventure, extraordinary seascape and for that feeling of being re-connected to the land
