Pulling up at the elegant wrought iron gates and you know that you are going to be welcomed to a very special place.
William and Suzanne have established this extraordinary haven on the banks of the Waikato River where it bursts from Lake Taupo and surges down to the wonderful Huka Falls and finally out to sea.
This fishing lodge with two suites - The Garden and The Heron - are adorned with Persian rugs and interesting artworks. So close to town but so private, I walked with Suzanne through the gardens.
This place is not called 'Garden Lodge' on a whim. Magnificent rhododendrons, camellia, roses and perennials all painting an enduring picture and Suzanne knows the botanical names of every one - amazing! They have lovingly created these gardens over many years. We join William and Suzanne in the garden beside the lily pond for a glass of wine from William's highly acclaimed wine cellar before heading into town to one of the recommended restaurants. They could have been a world away - not five minutes.
This is the perfect place to stay a few days, take in the world renowned golf courses, fish Lake Taupo and rivers or head to the central plateau for skiing or tramping. Guests are very important to your hosts who will join you for breakfast and will happily help to plan your day.
