The country is much closer than I thought and superbly represented at Wainui Country Retreat Farmstay, Waterfall Lodge, a stylishly rustic, private getaway.

20 minutes from Auckland central on the motorway and a short drive further along picturesque country roads is perfect timing to unwind and you are here! A romantic boutique farm retreat, overlooking your very own private waterfall.

I already felt old friends with Devon, our multi-talented hostess who paid particular attention in ascertaining special requests before arrival. Her warm hospitality extended to inviting us to join in the next day's farm activities if we so chose. This 45-acre working farm is in a progressively popular, yet thankfully still un-spoilt, northern Auckland region offering so much to explore in the area.

Introductions aside, Devon showed us down to the "oh so romantic" self-contained lodge, our home away from home. Here we were treated to modern comforts such as complementary kitchen provisions, fresh farm veggies even a personalised welcome note. Much time was spent relaxing on the deck listening to birdsong, wind rustling through the trees and the waterfall's song. Pizza from the wood fired oven was delicious, followed by a glass of wine in the outdoor heated clawfoot bath. A wonderful place to unwind and our recommendation to experience this slice of rural bliss to its fullest - at least two nights' stay. We suspect you will want for more.
